Prescriptions

Can my veterinary surgeon charge me for a prescription? Show Answer

As of 1st October 2008, a veterinary surgeon may add a small fee to cover administration costs.

My Vet is not so keen to hand over a prescription; does he have a legal obligation to do so? Show Answer

The law states that veterinary surgeons can only prescribe for animals that are under that veterinary surgeons care and registered at the veterinary surgeons place of practice and must have adequate facts and history of the animal before prescribing any medication for that animal. If the veterinary surgeon would be prepared to supply medicines to you for your pet on request, the veterinary surgeon/practice may not and cannot refuse to provide you with a prescription for your pet.

Yes, we will also accept the prescription in email format or you can post it to the following address:

Can a prescription have more then one product written on it, or do I have to have one prescription for each product that my vet has prescribed? Show Answer

You can have as many prescribed products on one prescription as is required, the prescription must also include label instructions from the vet for each prescribed product with specific dosage directions which is printed and fixed by us to each product prescribed.

Is there a particular form or document that my vet must use to write out a prescription for my pet? Show Answer

No but you can down load a Prescription Form from our prescriptions page, our prescription form has the correct questions which must be filled in by your vet as this specific information which must appear on the prescription form, Since October 2005 the prescription MUST contain precise dosage instructions.

My vet has prescribed 1-month worth of tablets on the prescription form, is it ok for me to place an order for more tablets than is on the prescription? Show Answer

No sorry by law we can only dispense the amount that your vet has prescribed on the prescription. If your pet is on long term medication you could ask your veterinary surgeon to prescribe a repeat prescription this is the same prescription but has written on the prescription repeat1, repeat2, repeat3, and so on you can have repeats up to Six months. Please note that Phenobarbitone and Mysoline by law can not be prescribed as repeat prescriptions a new prescription must be supplied when either drug is prescribed.

I have a prescription from my vet for a drug which does not appear on your web site. Can you supply it for me? Show Answer

Certain drugs that are not licensed for veterinary use, but have been prescribed by a vet can be supplied by us. However, we do not advertise these products and if you telephone us on 01920 823615 Monday - Friday between 9am and 4.30pm we will be able to place the order for you.
